Contrary to popular belief, being a parent is not hard. You can wake up in the morning, and as long as you spend the rest of the day keeping yourself and your offspring alive, you can consider it a success. In fact, it’s so easy, thanks to playstation, xbox and netflix, you can often parent in cruise control, from the other side of the house, especially in the summer. If you time it right, you can get in a couple of naps, a trip to the store, or maybe the movies, and they’ll be none the wiser. The summer can go by so fast if you play it right. Let them sleep till noon, throw them in their room at 9pm, BAM! The day’s over.

Dear Sports Parents, Chill Out.

I actually spent an hour online last week searching for AAU basketball teams my son could possibly try out for so he doesn’t get left behind and miss out on playing college basketball.

He’s nine.

Nine years old, and the way things are structured nowadays, I’m concerned he’s falling behind by not playing year round basketball at a high level.

How did this happen? How did I get so caught up on planning out my son’s future for him?

It’s the culture in which we live. We created it, and now we’re victims of it.

Good Job, Teach

I freely admit it. I’ve taken teachers for granted. Sure, as a kid, you wanted the ones that weren’t too hard on you when you screwed up, or maybe
the ones who never noticed when you did.
As a parent, you merely hope they will turn your children into the smartest kids in town. We look at state rankings of schools and hope ours is smarter than that dumb school down the street. Because, by God, my kid needs to have a good job someday so I’m not supporting them till they’re 35. Continue reading
